2024 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year: Meet the Semifinalists

The jury selected 25 cars from a list of 52 cars and unveiled them during the Detroit Auto Show’s opening press event at the Huntington Place Convention Center in downtown Detroit. The listings include ten cars, ten multi-purpose vehicles, and ten trucks. This time, as automakers seek to create lineups of all-electric vehicles, more than half of the vehicles still in operation feature an electric motor.

There are eight electric cars remaining in the semi-finals: BMW i5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Chevrolet Silverado. EveChevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Genesis Electrified GV70, Kia EV9, and Volvo EX30 crossover.

Hybrid cars have their fair share of opportunities among the semi-finalists. This category is represented by the Toyota Prius/Toyota Prime, Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, Dodge Hornet, Mazda CX-90, Toyota Grand Highlander, Toyota Crown, BMW 5 Series, Honda Accord, and Hyundai. The next stage of the competition is to eliminate seven of them from each list, leaving just three in the running for the 2024 North American Car of the Year (NACTOY) award. The three for each category will be announced on November 16 in Los Angeles.

A 50-member jury, respected automotive journalists, will analyze the finalists. Coming from print, electronic, broadcast and broadcast media from the United States and Canada, they will all have the opportunity to drive all of the vehicles on the lists during the Michigan Drive Comparison event, later this year. After completing their individual and group evaluations, they will cast their votes to determine the final three vehicles for each category. Winners will be announced in Detroit on January 4, 2024.

Last year, the jury voted for the Acura Integra to win Car of the Year. The electric Ford F-150 Lightning took home Truck of the Year honors, while another zero-emission model, the Kia EV6, left home with the SUV of the Year award.
