A4 Portway closed after police car crash in Bristol – updates

The A4 Portway is currently closed following a collision with an unmarked police car. Traffic between Avonmouth and Bristol is affected by delays as a result.

The incident was first reported on the Inrix traffic monitoring website shortly before 12pm today (September 6). “The A4 Portway Eastbound was closed due to an incident from Hung Road to Park Road. This affected traffic towards Bristol,” says Inrix.




They included an unmarked Volvo XC90 police car, which was responding to the emergency, and a Kia Stonic. The driver of the Kia was taken to hospital with injuries described as “life-changing.”

Witnesses told BristolLive that the incident appeared to be “major” and that much of the Portway was closed. They added that the accident occurred at the Hong Road intersection. The road is likely to remain closed for some time while investigation work is conducted.

The road was reopened overnight

The A4 Portway was reopened by 12.20am early today (September 7) following the incident.

The A4 Portway southbound remains closed

Investigation work is still ongoing after a collision occurred between an unmarked police car and a Kia Stonic, which resulted in the Kia driver being seriously injured.

Avon and Somerset Police statement

Emergency services are at the scene of a crash which has closed the A4 Portway in Bristol.

The collision between two vehicles occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6, at a traffic light at the intersection of Portway Road and Hung Road.

The driver and sole occupant of the gray Kia Stonic went to the hospital with injuries described as potentially life-changing. Their relatives are aware of this.

The other vehicle, an unmarked Volvo XC90 police car, was responding to an emergency.

One officer went to the hospital for evaluation of injuries that are not currently believed to be life-threatening or life-altering. The second officer received medical attention at the scene.

The collision was referred to the IOPC.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time and motorists are urged to look for other routes.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any camera or other footage that may assist in the investigation is asked to call 101 and give the reference 5223216301.

Bus services have been disrupted due to the closure of the Portway

First West of England tweeted that bus services 3 and 4 had been delayed due to the Portway closure.

Congestion with diverted traffic

There is heavy traffic as drivers turn along the B4054 next to Shirehampton Park Golf Club.

Google Maps has reported heavy traffic on the A4 Portway near its junction with the A4162 Sylvian Way where there is also congestion as drivers look for alternative routes to the A4.

Slow traffic continues

“The A4 is closed in both directions, and traffic is slow due to an accident between the M5 (Portway roundabout, Shirehampton) and the Sea Mills roundabout. Note the change of location. Sensors indicate that the closure has extended towards Sea Mills and the Portway roundabout, affecting Traffic between Sea Mills and Avonmouth.”

Extended road closure

The road closure has now been extended to the Sea Mills turnoff, according to Inrix.

“The A4 is closed in both directions, and traffic is slow due to an accident from Hung Road (Shirhampton) to the Sea Mills turnoff (Sea Mills). Note the change of location. Sensors indicate that the closure has extended towards Sea Mills, affecting traffic Between Sea Mills and Avonmouth.”

An eyewitness told BristolLive that a “major incident” had occurred at Portway. They said: “There is a major collision on the portway at the Hong Road intersection. A large part of the portway is closed.”
