Could this be the crossover for you?
GAC Motor Philippines has had a strong 2023 with back-to-back launches of promising vehicles – one of which is the EMCO.
What are the powers of GAC Emkoo?
The price of the GAC Emkoo starts at P1.298 million.
What is GAC Emkoo’s segment competitor?
Many consider the GAC Emkoo’s competitor in its segment to be Ford territory.
Equipped with ultra-modern styling, a wealth of modern interior appointments, and a good powertrain setup, it will come as no surprise that the GAC Emkoo will leave heads turning wherever you see it. But are the above features enough to make the panel compete in the hotly contested crossover segment in the country?
GAC Motor Philippines invited members of the automotive media to take a quick tour of the Emco.
Read to the end of this article to find out if it’s the right crossover for you.
One of the GAC Emkoo’s strongest suits is its looks. The Chinese automaker ticks all the boxes in the aesthetics department by giving the crossover plenty of bold lines and aggressive angles that give the car a compelling presence on the road – rain or shine.
During a trip from Alabang to Batangas, fellow road users noticeably eyed the GAC Emkoo convoy as they headed to the destination.
And you can’t blame onlookers as the GAC Emkoo wears its own ‘Luminous V-shaped’ grille flanked by ‘Eyes of Revelation’ headlights. The bold front end is made even more powerful thanks to a wide, beefy front end that proudly wears the GAC badge.
The profile of the GAC Emkoo is also great. Different geometric lines are found that give the crossover a sporty look. To add to this, it also gets flush door handles, angular wheel arches and door cladding, black A- and B-pillars, and a set of 18- or 19-inch two-tone wheels wrapped in 236/60 R18 tyres. Or tires size 235/55 R19.
Its rear end is also occupied by a pair of quantum taillights, a bold-looking rear diffuser, and a very prominent spoiler.
With such modern flair, it’s easy to see why GAC Emkoo is getting nods of approval from its onlookers.
The GAC Emkoo’s interior perfectly reflects its exterior. A lot of modern appointments are found that aim to make a person’s trip comfortable.
A good example of this are these leather-covered seats with ventilation functions, so those sitting in the front will not have to worry about traveling under the hot sun. Moreover, the driver’s seat has a six-way power adjustment feature, which can definitely help drivers of different heights get a better view of the road ahead.
It also features a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel with multi-function controls, a leather center armrest, soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door panels, as well as a sleek-looking “crystal shift knob” (that kind of reminds us) of a 3D view From Eotech) and these modern interior door lifts.
When it comes to technology, the GAC Emkoo has a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit with Apple CarPlay. The aforementioned displays provide relevant driving data for both the driver and front passenger.
My only issue with the GAC Emkoo is its relatively small rear window, which can make maneuvering in tight spaces a challenge. However, it has a 360-degree surround-view camera system (viewable from the infotainment display), which will help in getting in and out of tight areas.
Under the hood of the GAC Emkoo is the brand’s 1.5-liter “mega wave” engine. The aforementioned petrol mill is linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission system.
On paper, it produces 177bhp with 270Nm of torque.
For the duration of the flight, GAC Emkoo proved to have sufficient power while the group was en route to the site. Power delivery is not abrupt, but a boost is felt once you get past the rubber band effect.
Great brakes and suspension
You’ll have to give it to GAC Emkoo as part of our trip which involved going through the narrow, winding and steep section of Sungay Road in Talisay Batangas.
Despite the fast turns and sharp turns, the GAC Emkoo showed that it has what it takes to conquer various terrains and keep its passengers safe in diverse driving conditions.
Stopping power comes from disc brakes, both front and rear, which is why the GAC Emkoo can handle steep roads so well.
Likewise, it’s supported by MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link suspension at the rear, which helps reduce body roll – although it’s still there.
It is also worth noting that the GAC Emkoo is equipped with several active and passive safety technologies such as adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist, traffic jam assist, and others.
The GAC Emkoo comes with a host of features that will appeal to a lot of car buyers. Moreover, its appearance could leave those in the market for crossover fans thinking again about their options as the nameplate could be considered a beautiful car.
In this sense, it competes with models like the Ford Territory, which is also manufactured in China.
The price of the GAC Emkoo starts at P1.298 million.
