GMC pickup truck rescued after trying to climb a Colorado mountain

The truck became stuck on top of the mountain after driving along a hiking trail, not realizing it was not a road.

ALMA, Colo. – An off-road recovery organization had to help recover a pickup truck stuck on top of a Colorado 14er.

Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery said it was contacted on Aug. 27 to help recover a GMC Canyon truck that was stuck on Mount Lincoln near Alma.

According to Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery, the truck was driving on the road, not realizing it was a hiking trail, not a road. The track continued to narrow and the passenger’s rear wheel eventually slid off the track.

After the driver descended into Alma, the Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery Team was contacted and a recovery was attempted on August 30 with eight volunteers.

At 14,293 feet tall, Mount Lincoln is the eighth highest peak in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.

“Due to the narrow path, it was not possible to bring more than one or two vehicles behind the vehicle,” Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery posted on Facebook. “The truck was located high up, off camber, and in a sparse field, making anchors a challenge. The team tried placing a tow anchor in different locations several times but was unsuccessful.”

The organization said its volunteers were able to maneuver the truck on tow boards, but were unable to successfully fit the recovery platform around the truck and recovery plans were abandoned because daylight was out.

While Colorado 4×4 Rescue and Recovery planned a second recovery mission over Labor Day weekend, the driver reported that a commercial towing company recovered the truck on September 1 after six days on the mountain.

“In all, our team spent a total of 132 man-hours and traveled a total of 1,480 miles to assist the owner of this vehicle. We are very pleased to hear that he was able to get it off the track safely,” the organization said. He said.
