Let’s take a look inside the 2024 Subaru Ascent
The 2024 Subaru Ascent is the brand’s largest SUV, a 3-row model that competes with the likes of the Kia Telluride, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mazda CX-90, and Honda Pilot.
With seating for up to eight people, the Ascent comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) on every trim. A subtle refresh for the 2023 model year helped refresh the exterior with new headlights and a larger grille. The mid-cycle restart also improved the infotainment system and upgraded advanced driver aids such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
Following this change, the Subaru Ascent is essentially unchanged for 2024. The sole powertrain consists of a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). We found this engine to provide adequate performance during our testing, even if many direct competitors have more power.
Eight trim levels are available, so finding the perfect 2024 Subaru Ascent for you may require a little homework. With that in mind, let’s take a look inside the 2024 Subaru Ascent.
Passenger room and comfort
During our time with Subaru’s largest SUV, we found it to be a roomy and comfortable driving companion. It doesn’t feel like much from the driver’s seat. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard, as are second-row seats. The captain’s chairs in the second row are replaceable, improving comfort and access to the third row.
Captain’s chairs are available starting at Premium, a trim level above the base Ascent. We think this upgrade is worth the extra expense when you consider that the Premium also has a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and safety goodies like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic assist. Water-resistant and genuine leather upholstery is standard on higher trims like the Onyx Edition and Touring models.
If there’s a minor drawback to the Ascension, it’s this: There’s not much expansive space in the third row. With 31.7 inches of legroom, the Ascent’s rear seats are best suited for kids.
Features and technology
However, the 2024 Subaru Ascent doesn’t skimp on onboard technology, even if you prefer to stick with less affordable trims. An 11.6-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, along with four USB ports, satellite radio, and a 6-speaker stereo. We also appreciate the user-friendly nature of the infotainment system and the clarity of its menus.
Another point in favor of going up? Subaru continues to use physical controls for frequently used functions such as volume and climate control settings. Too often, modern vehicles bury controls like these deep in touchscreen menus that distract from everyday driving. The Ascent Limited is highlighted by a 360-degree surround-view display and a rich-sounding 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.
Recent camera and software improvements have also enhanced the capability of standard driver aids like the Ascent’s automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. This and other safety elements are bundled into what Subaru calls the EyeSight suite of driver-assist technologies. The Ascent has routinely scored top scores in safety/crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Materials and design
Airy and spacious are perhaps the best ways to describe the Ascension’s interior environment. We’ve already mentioned the adequate room for adults in the first two rows, especially when ordering captain’s chairs in the second row. While there are some economy-looking bits here and there, especially on lower trims, the overall feel of the Ascent’s cabin is solid and built to last.
The cloth seats and second-row seat in the Ascension base are perfectly acceptable. However, we know that many SUV shoppers will enjoy moving up to higher trims with features like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting.
Charging room and flexibility
The 2024 Subaru Ascent’s cargo room is about average package for a midsize SUV. With each seat occupied, you’ll find 17.8 cubic feet of space behind the third row. This expands to 43.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
A power liftgate is available on the Ascent Premium. It’s part of the Convenience Package, which includes keyless entry with push-button start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and automatic reverse braking.
