Titled “8 Minutes 20 Seconds,” a reference to the time it takes sunlight to reach Earth, this installation will brilliantly showcase the incredible potential of harnessing carbon-neutral energy. It represents a sculptural interpretation of Lexus’ pioneering new electrification model, intricately built around Van Opel’s unique use of organic photovoltaics (OPV) commonly used in solar applications. Through the lens of Van Opel’s expertise in solar design, this installation not only pays homage to the sun’s journey, but also amplifies Lexus’ pioneering electric vehicle prowess in technology and environmental awareness.
Lexus’ steadfast commitment to social responsibility in mobility design and broader societal contexts guides the brand, pushing it to challenge convention and push boundaries while maintaining a broad vision of sustainability. The LF-ZC (Lexus Future Zero Emission Catalyst) concept is part of Lexus’ upcoming next-generation BEV lineup. As the name suggests, the model is a catalyst for new experiences in the era of electric vehicles, including elevated driving dynamics, unparalleled design and new exclusive services – an example of the Lexus brand promise to create cars that enrich the lives of discerning customers.
The installation marks Van Opel’s first public project in Miami. Lexus has been bringing installations to Miami Art and Design Week since 2018, and this project marks the second year of its partnership with ICA Miami. Together, Lexus and ICA Miami are committed to building experiences that inspire visitors to consider the positive impact of creative design.
To realize the installation, Studio Van Opel collaborates with Random Studio, a renowned B Corporation that creates immersive spatial experiences globally. The installation will model the LF-ZC on a large scale, which is created using OPV sheets that cast colorful shadows when sunlight hits them throughout the day. Light and motion sensors located within the sculpture will add to the engaging and interactive nature of the installation, creating a visual spectacle that stimulates the senses and embodies the inspiring possibilities of Lexus’ electric revolution.
