List of most stolen car models in Ontario

Ontario residents who drive a Honda CR-V or Lexus RX Series may want to double-check the door locks.

These vehicle models topped a new list of the most stolen vehicles in Ontario in 2022. Non-profit Équité released its annual list Among the 10 most stolen cars in Canada and its provinces.

The Honda CR-V has been ranked as the most stolen model in all of Canada, topping the national list for the second year in a row.

All of the top 10 cars stolen in Ontario were mostly 2019 or newer models. Équité notes that criminals often aim to maximize their profits by targeting newer brands.

Équité says car thefts reached a historic high in 2022, increasing by nearly 50 per cent in Ontario. The association says this rise puts “Canada in the international spotlight as a source country for illicit trade.”

“Canadians expect to see a collaborative approach to combating the urgent and ongoing national car theft crisis,” said Terry O’Brien, President and CEO of Équité. “This problem will not be solved in isolation; We need meaningful change and collaborative solutions embraced by automakers, all levels of government, and law enforcement.

Associated says drivers should take these common-sense steps to reduce the odds of their car being stolen:

  • Keep car doors closed at all times
  • Never leave the keys in the ignition position or start the vehicle remotely
  • Make sure the windows are closed
  • Park your car in a well-lit area
  • Park your car in a secure garage, if possible

Commonsense advice provides a first layer of protection, and Équité says further steps can be taken, including installing anti-theft devices, installing a vehicle immobilizer, and investing in a tracking system.

York Regional Police unveiled a car theft prevention campaign in September as they detailed Which compounds are most likely to be targeted? By thieves in the area.

Police determined those most targeted include vehicle models in York Region including the Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX350, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Ram 1500 and GMC Yukon.
