The Cadillac Escalade is a long-standing SUV star with more social capital than the brand itself, but the 2024 XT4 small car doesn’t live up to the lofty expectations set by its superior sibling. The XT4’s exterior looks sharp and its interior is more spacious than competitors like the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA250. However, the little Caddy’s 235-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine — the only engine available — isn’t as refined as similar engines in its top SUV competitors. Likewise, the XT4’s road manners aren’t up to par with the competition, and despite its solid ride, it’s not particularly satisfying when the road turns twisty. If you like long seats, know that the XT4 offers a higher driving position than most small luxury crossovers — but the Volvo XC40 does, too, and has a more premium cabin, too.

What’s new for 2024?

Although the XT4 only joined Cadillac’s lineup yesterday, 2024 marks its sixth model year, so it’s time for a refresh. I got one. Cadillac has given the XT4’s exterior design a refresh with a new front fascia and reworked LED lighting elements, giving it a face that closely resembles that of the larger XT6 SUV and the bold-looking Lyriq electric SUV. The result looks very good. In addition to the styling changes up front, there are also new wheel designs and some tweaks to the rear of the XT4. Inside, the XT4 adopts a 33.0-inch Lyriq infotainment display, which extends from in front of the driver to the passenger-side edge of the dashboard. The system runs Cadillac’s latest infotainment interface — which is based on Google’s Android Automotive software — and features wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers can now specify a 13-speaker AKG stereo system as an option, and the XT4’s onboard Wi-Fi hotspot has been upgraded to 5G.

Pricing and which one to buy

Pricing for the 2024 Cadillac XT4 starts at $39,090 and goes up to $43,190 depending on trim and options.

The Premium Luxury and Sport models cost about the same, but since the former doesn’t live up to its name and the latter is better to drive, we recommend the XT4 Sport. It features unique wheel designs, black exterior trim and exclusive interior accents. The Sport model also has a suspension with adaptive dampers and better bolstered front seats.

Engine, transmission and performance

Under the hood of all XT4s is a 235-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It is coupled to a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. Interior, comfort and charging

Although the XT4’s interior is comfortable and spacious, it’s not as upscale as we expect in this luxury segment. The dashboard and upper door panels are covered in faux leather, but at the bottom of the doors and center console, the cheaper, sharp-edged plastic remains. The buttons and switches look as if they’re likely to be shared with less expensive offerings in GM’s lineup. Space is great for front seat passengers and adequate in the back seat as well. As with the passenger cabin, the XT4’s luggage room is spacious. Behind the XT4’s back seat, we placed six carry-ons, and with the seatbacks folded flat, we were able to fit 18, a bit more than smaller competitors like Mini Cooper Countryman. If you’re looking for a small SUV that can haul cargo as well as a larger car, Volvo XC40– which contains 23 handbags – is worth seeing.

Information, entertainment and communication

All XT4 models come with a 33.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The touchscreen looks crisp, stretches across two-thirds of the dashboard, and features rounded edges that nicely complement the XT4’s interior. The interface is reasonably easy to use too, and in addition to touching the screen, the user can also interact via a controller-mounted handle. An on-board Wi-Fi hotspot that provides internet access via a 5G connection is standard, as is a seven-speaker stereo and in-dash navigation; Optional 13-speaker AKG stereo.

Safety and driver assistance features

Cadillac XT4 offers a large number of Driver assistance features, but not all of them are standard fare.
