Stellantis unveils STLA large BEV platform with a range of up to 800 km/500 miles and ultimate flexibility to cover a wide range of vehicles
STLA’s large platform is designed with unparalleled technical flexibility that enables greater levels of vehicle diversity, superior quality and customer satisfaction from a core set of components, combined with robust, cost-effective manufacturing processes that can be replicated at multiple assembly plants. Upcoming products will cover a full range of vehicle types, from cars to crossovers to SUVs, all of which will give customers the benefits of electric propulsion of instant torque response combined with zero emissions. The brand’s product announcements will begin this year.

STLA Large is one of four global electric vehicle platforms, identified at EV Day 2021, that underpin the company’s future products and are key to achieving the bold goals of the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. It is the second platform to be unveiled following the release of the best-in-class STLA Medium in July 2023. The STLA Large will be installed at several plants in Europe and North America and will be available in multi-power variants, including hybrid and internal combustion. Stellantis’ iconic brands will design large STLA vehicles to best suit the needs and desires of their customers, ranging from family-oriented to high-performance to off-road capable SUVs to luxury vehicles.
The platform’s inherent flexibility allows engineers and designers to adjust wheelbase, overall length, overall width and height, and ground clearance. A variety of suspension modules and powertrain mounts can be used to suit the vehicle’s specific performance goals which include ride, handling and comfort. Engineers can modify key dimensions, such as the driver’s foot spindle, the front and rear overhangs, or the passenger compartment floor, to improve the vehicle’s capabilities and performance.
Through the use of advanced high-strength materials, the platform is optimized for weight and rigidity to enable best-in-class performance across a variety of vehicle types. Components are assembled within the platform to maximize usable interior and storage space. Key comfort and performance components, such as the cabin heating/cooling system, steering, brake assist and propulsion, are designed to minimize energy consumption to enhance driving range.
Flexibility includes the propulsion systems of the unibody platform. The STLA Large is designed and engineered as a genuine BEV platform with the option of 400V and 800V electrical architectures. Three-in-one electric drive modules (EDMs) that include the motor, power inverter and gear reduction can be configured in front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive layouts. The power inverter uses silicon carbide semiconductor technology to reduce power loss. Drivetrain performance can be upgraded over the life of the vehicle via over-the-air software updates.
Based on specific vehicle objectives, STLA Large accepts powertrain enhancements such as limited-slip differentials or wheel tip disconnects that can improve performance or reduce mechanical drag to improve efficiency and range. Overall, the big STLA platform has the ability to carry massive power that will outperform any of the existing Hellcat V-8 engines.
Recognizing the importance of balancing driving range and cost, the platform initially includes battery pack options with power ratings between 85 and 118 kilowatt-hours (kWh). The STLA Large targets a total range of 800 km/500 miles for the sedan, and is designed to readily accept future energy storage technologies when they reach production readiness.
The initial generation of propulsion components has the ability to achieve acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in the range of two seconds. Fast charging will add up to 4.5 kWh per minute to the 800-volt battery pack.
The STLA Large also supports hybrid and internal combustion drive systems without compromising the vehicle’s core capabilities. Flexibility provides a bridge for customers around the world as they transition to electric propulsion and develop a robust, widely available charging network. Design flexibility includes transverse and longitudinal engine mounting configurations, and support for FWD/RWD/AWD powertrains.

Stellantis is investing more than €50 billion over the next decade in electrification to achieve the goals of reaching a 100% battery electric vehicle sales mix in Europe and a 50% battery electric vehicle sales mix in the United States by 2030. With these sales, the company is securing approximately 400 GWh of battery capacity, including support from six battery manufacturing plants in North America and Europe.
