The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV makes its global debut. See what’s new
The German auto giant unveiled the new generation of the Tiguan SUV for global markets. Scheduled to be officially launched by the end of the year, the third-generation Tiguan comes with several changes including design, interior trim, features as well as the powertrain. The Tiguan has been the German automaker’s best-selling model worldwide. The model sold in India is the second generation Tiguan with a starting price of $35.16 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Volkswagen Tiguan SUV is now based on the automaker’s new MEB-Evo platform. The SUV stands slightly larger than the previous generation version at 4,539 mm long, 1,842 mm wide and 1,639 mm wide without the roof rails. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2680 mm. In terms of design, the new Tiguan looks more rounded with a hint of the influence of the ID.4 electric SUV. It now gets a horizontal hood, IQ.LIGHT HD headlights and rounded wheel arches. However, the biggest changes can be found inside.
The cabin of the new Tiguan SUV features a redesigned interior. The dashboard has been updated with air conditioning vents and new controls as well as ambient light settings. There is a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a 10.3-inch digital driver display. The infotainment screen goes up to 15 inches for the higher-spec variants. Although the dashboard is now full of touch controls, the steering wheel has the old and traditional controls mounted on it. The center console has a rotary knob to select the different driving modes available.
Under the hood, the new Tiguan comes with several engine options. There’s a new 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The engine can generate a power of 150 horsepower. The electric motor can increase its power by up to 20 PS and 25 Nm of additional torque. The same engine is also coupled with a hybrid system that offers a range of up to 100 kilometers in electric-only mode. Power output reaches 272 horsepower with this powertrain.
Other engine options include 2.0 petrol and diesel engines. Power and torque range between 204 hp/320 Nm and 265 hp/400 Nm in the gasoline versions. For the diesel, power and torque are up to 193 PS/400 Nm. All engine options inside the new Tiguan will come with a choice of either a six-speed or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
