The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 set new U.S. sales records for September

Who says electric cars aren’t sold in the US? The most popular electric models from Hyundai and Kia set new U.S. sales records in September, with momentum expected to continue through the end of the year.

Korea’s largest automakers are tapping into the growing electric vehicle market in the United States. Kia and Hyundai posted 15 consecutive months of growth in the U.S. last month.

The Kia EV6 set a new October sales record with 1,542 models sold, an increase of 30% over last year. Although Kia did not provide details on the Niro EV model, the company said that total EV sales rose 83% year-over-year.

The automaker recently revealed pricing for the 2024 EV6, including a new long-range Light variant that starts at less than $50,000.

Kia also opened orders for its first three-row electric SUV, the EV9, in October. The Kia EV9 starts at $54,900 with a range of up to 230 miles. For $59,200, the Long Range version offers a range of up to 304 miles.

“The upcoming 2024 EV9, scheduled to launch soon, has already received significant consumer interest through pre-orders, establishing its presence in the competitive electric SUV segment from the get-go,” said Eric Watson, vice president of sales, Kia America. “

Meanwhile, Hyundai, Kia’s parent company, set a new record for electric vehicle sales in September. Sales of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUV reached 2,979 cars, an increase of 89% over last year.

“Hyundai is heading into November with great momentum, and our winter sales event promotion and strong marketing support begins now,” commented Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

The automaker sold 28,285 IONIQ 5 models in the US this year as one of its best-selling electric vehicles.

Although sales are lower compared to the summer months, this is a typical seasonal trend that generally returns to the winter.

Hyundai also sold 1,239 IONIQ 6 models, with sales reaching 9,557 so far in 2023. The company recently announced that the 2024 IONIQ 6 will start at $38,615, more than $4,000 less than this year’s model.

This growth comes after Hyundai offered many incentives and promotions over the past few months.

Hyundai reduced electric car rental prices last month, offering some of the cheapest prices since launch. A promotion was also offered that gives those who buy or lease the IONIQ 5 or 6 a free ChargePoint Home charger and a $600 credit. But this deal expired at the end of October.
