The truck driver crashes into the bridge that destroys the house and leaves the scene

GEORGETOWN, Colo. — Police in Georgetown said Wednesday they are searching for a truck driver who was involved in an accident Monday after the truck they were driving destroyed a bridge and a nearby home, then left the scene.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m., as the driver of the truck and trailer attempted to turn left from Argentina Street onto 7th Street.

Police said they believe retractable support equipment underneath the trailer struck the end of the bridge’s railing and tore it from the wooden posts to which it was attached.

Although Georgetown has a designated truck route for longer vehicles with a permit, the truck driver was not using that specific route. The road the driver used Monday was too narrow for the truck to pass, Sgt. John Gaskins of the Georgetown Police Department said.

Photos provided by Georgetown Police show the wooden railings that were torn from the bridge protruding from the side of a house near the bridge.

A man and a woman were inside the house when the accident occurred. One of them was slightly injured.

The semi-truck is described as a white cab towing a white box trailer. According to Georgetown Police, the truck had a white flak jacket on the right side. The left side of the wind jacket is believed to be missing and is expected to have light to moderate damage along the cab and trailer. Police said that there was very little information available to identify the driver.

“At this time, we don’t have any leads. There were no marks on the trailer. There were some marks on the passenger door of the cab, but due to the quality of the video (we couldn’t) read it,” Gaskins said.

They said the driver left the scene without stopping, and the video showing the truck leaving the city at a traffic roundabout is of poor quality, and it is difficult for police to spot any marks on the truck.

Based on the video, police believe the truck was headed west on Interstate 70.

The estimated cost of the damage is not yet known.
