Toyota’s all-new concept, the 2024 Tacoma XRunner

This new model is already stirring emotions and we have the chance to see it this week as a performance-focused concept version is being presented by the brand at the 2023 SEMA Show being held in Las Vegas.

The Tacoma X-Runner has a lowered suspension and benefits from more efficient mechanicals in particular.

Under the hood we find a version of the 3.4-liter V6 engine that powers the Tundra pickup truck. We will remember that the new Tacoma will be available with 4-cylinder engines only. So we are an exception here. The mechanicals are tuned to deliver 421 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, enough to turn this pickup truck into a veritable catapult.

For comparison, the most powerful version of the 2024 Tacoma will benefit from a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder hybrid engine with a power of 326 horsepower.

The X-Runner also benefits from a solid axle borrowed from the Tundra, with a 4.30:1 axle ratio and an electronically locking differential that distributes torque between the rear wheels. The exhaust pipe now extends just below the rocker panel, on the side of the model.

Air suspension on the Tundra is also present. According to Toyota, it allows the Tacoma to drive lower while still being able to carry loads. The team behind the truck also customized the length of the control arms due to the Tacoma’s low stance. Toyota also strengthened the car’s body and widened the car’s track by about five centimetres. The springs are stiffer, and there are 2.5-inch Bilstein shocks at all ends.

The truck rides on 21-inch carbon fiber wheels with forged aluminum centers. It is shod with Michelin 285/45R21 sport tires.

The truck at SEMA features the same color scheme (Speedway Blue) as the original Tacoma X-Runner that debuted at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show.

Are we entitled to a production copy? Nothing suggests it, but one thing is certain: there will be people who care.
