Unsecured load, two-vehicle collision closes Sunset Boulevard in St. George – St. George News

street. George — A child’s toy that fell from the back of a pickup truck caused a two-vehicle collision on Sunset Boulevard, closing westbound lanes Saturday afternoon.
St. George Police Officer Brian Hendricks said a brown Dodge Ram 2500 was headed west with a full truckload of miscellaneous items.
A children’s plastic outdoor play set fell from the back of the truck, knocking the silver Honda Civic out of commission. A silver Ford F-150 towing a silver trailer behind the Civic slammed on its brakes, striking the rear of the Civic.
The impact caused the civilian vehicle to spin and travel across the sidewalk, while the F-150 moved left, leaving skid marks more than 40 feet down the median.
Hendricks said it was about 11:45 a.m. when they were dispatched to the scene in front of the Express Chicken Greek restaurant.
There were two adults and three children in the Ram, a man in the civilian vehicle and two men in the F-150.
The elderly man in the Civic suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. George Regional Hospital. The younger passenger in the F-150 was transported with breathing problems to the same medical facility. Both amenities were provided by two Gold Cross Ambulance units.

The adult woman in the Ram was cited for an unsafe load causing an accident, while the man driving the F-150 was cited for following too close, Hendricks said.
“Make sure all your loads are completely secure,” Hendricks said. “Leave enough space when following other vehicles in case someone slams on their brakes.”
The lanes were completely closed for about an hour and reopened at about 12:55 p.m. St. George Police, St. George Fire Department, St. George Animal Control and Gold Cross Ambulance responded and assisted.
Red Rock Collison Repair and Matrixx Towing towed both vehicles from the scene. This report is based on statements by police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
