Starting with the XC60, this midsize family SUV is known for its soft, comfortable ride.

Its suspension is perfectly tuned to absorb the many lumps and bumps that plague our roads.

However, the suspension is still firm enough to give it some stiffness in corners rather than excessive lean, as is sometimes the case with larger SUVs.

It’s only available with 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, but mild-hybrid models (badged ‘B’ rather than ‘T’ or ‘D’) help improve efficiency.

The B5 is very fast, but the B4 is good enough for most drivers.

There are also plug-in hybrid versions, which are very fast and, when charged regularly, open the doors to very low running costs.

The XC40 has a slightly smarter feel. And with its lighter steering, it’s better suited to narrow side streets and small roundabouts.

The high driving position, large windows and large mirrors also improve visibility around town.

You can get them with smaller engines, including mild-hybrid options, but if you want a diesel, you’ll have to look at older models because Volvo stopped selling them several years ago.

The XC40 and XC60 come with all the in-car technology you’re likely to need, including connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Newer models also benefit from Google Voice Assistant and other Google services such as satellite navigation.

Both come with a safety kit and driver aids too, like adaptive cruise control, but you’ll have to pay more for optional extras like a 360-degree parking camera, depending on which model year you choose.

The XC60 is clearly the larger car, being both longer and wider, at 4,708mm long and 2,117mm wide, including mirrors.

Its height is also average for this class of vehicle, at 1,655mm, but the XC40 is approximately 1,652mm longer.

These numbers highlight the boxy design the XC40 uses to help give it more road presence — most other crossovers are much shorter.

The XC40 is 4,425mm long and 2,034mm wide, which is pretty normal.

Volvo quotes a range of figures for boot volumes – the XC60 has 483 liters of space up to the parcel shelf, but you can also choose to load it onto the roofline and/or fold the rear seats.

The XC40’s 452 liters of space is impressive and not much less than that of the XC60. Electric models also get a 31-litre storage space under the bonnet, known as a ‘funk’, which is suitable for storing charging cables.
