Wärtsilä solutions have been selected for the world’s first methanol-fueled hybrid RORO vessels

Wärtsilä, Press Release, September 13, 2023 at 10 a.m. EDT

Technology group Wärtsilä will supply an integrated hybrid propulsion system for two new hybrid vessels. The ships are being built at the China Merchants Jinling (Weihai) Co., Ltd shipyard for the Swedish shipping company Stena RoRo. The vessels will be the world’s first methanol-fueled hybrid RORO vessels and will operate on the Stena Line Irish Sea system. The combination of new sustainable fuels and electricity is in line with the company’s sustainable operations goal. Part of the order is booked by Wärtsilä in the second quarter of 2023, while the remaining order is booked in the third quarter of 2023.

Each vessel will be equipped with two Wärtsilä 32M multi-fuel engines now capable of operating on methanol fuel and with ammonia run-off. Wärtsilä will also supply the MthanolPac fuel storage, supply and control system, gearboxes, two controllable propellers (CPP), three forward thrust engines, the NACOS navigation system, three Wärtsilä 20 auxiliary engines and the hybrid electric system consisting of shore power . Batteries, shaft generators, inverters and transformers as well as the power management system make them work together.

Each vessel will also benefit from the Wärtsilä Hybrid Solution, optimizing fuel consumption today and allowing fully green operation in the future. The ships will also be equipped with the Wärtsilä shore energy solution that enables carbon-neutral operations when the ships are in port.

“These vessels are a further development of our previous freighter concepts, where priority is given to focusing on sustainability and future-proofing with multi-fuel combustion engines,” says Per Westling, Managing Director of Stena RoRo. “With the help of Wärtsilä’s advanced technology, we intend to have the greenest Ro-Ro vessels on the market.”

“We are proud to support these innovative hybrid vessels with our methanol-fueled engines and electrification systems. Both Stena RoRo and Wärtsilä share the same commitment to decarbonizing shipping operations, and these vessels represent another step in that direction by being the first methanol hybrids.” Ships in their class. “Not only will emissions be reduced to a minimum, but it will also have the most efficient use of energy during operations,” commented Roger Holm, Head of Wärtsilä’s Marine Energy Business.

The 147-meter-long ships will have a capacity of 2,800 meters and will be able to accommodate a total of 37 passengers and crew. Delivery is scheduled for June-November 2025. The Wärtsilä equipment will be delivered to the yard in 2024.

Wärtsilä has a strong relationship with Stena RoRo, and early in 2015 Wärtsilä converted the Stena Germanica to run on methanol fuel. The two companies are currently collaborating on a number of other Ro-Pax projects.
