Watch the Mercedes-AMG S63 Hybrid hit 186 mph in a freeway blast

The large luxury sedan goes from a standstill to 183 mph in just over 30 seconds.

Here’s your daily reminder that in the automotive world, big and heavy doesn’t mean slow. Sure, a small two-seater with a lightweight body can hop from corner to corner, but what about sprinting from a stop to 180-plus mph in 30 seconds? That’s an impressive feat for any car, let alone one that can massage your back while carrying five people in comfort.

That’s Mercedes-AMG S63 E performance in a nutshell. New video from AutoTopNL It shows the large luxury sedan in its natural habitat – taking down unrestricted sections of the German autobahn at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The video gets straight to the action; It starts with a full run from a stop to 295 kilometers per hour on the speedometer. That’s 183 mph, and while we’re not shown an exact time to get there, our stopwatch reveals a scant 31.16 seconds. That’s not bad considering that this large sedan weighs more than 2.5 tons.

Of course, having large amounts of horsepower certainly helps. To refresh your memory, the new AMG S63 E Performance pairs a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with a single electric motor. The result is a total of 791 horsepower and 1,055 pound-feet of torque. For context, a new Ram 2500 truck with a Cummins diesel engine has 1,075 lb-ft of twist and is rated to tow an exotic aircraft carrier. On the other side of the performance realm, the S63 can take advantage of its modest electric power to cruise more than 20 miles without using the combustion engine at all.

You will not find such economical travel in this video. In fact, after the initial full throttle operation, we see another pull that sends the speedometer to 299 km/h (186 mph). Mercedes-Benz states that the S63’s top speed is more than 180 mph, but 186 could be as well. The clip shows the large Mercedes steadily advancing to that speed, then remaining stationary there for several seconds.

This power, performance and luxury doesn’t come without a price and we mean that literally. Official US numbers haven’t been announced yet, but the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance should start at $200,000.
